Injured Worker Experience Update: Direct Deposit Option Dominates
Last June, Pinnacol introduced wage replacement through direct deposit for injured workers. Today, we can report that we have already achieved our goal of 70% of our injured workers enrolled in direct deposit. That represents annualized savings of over $100,000, but more importantly, one less thing for injured workers to worry about as they focus on their health and wellbeing.

Pinnacol Foundation Accepting Applications Until February 15
The Pinnacol Foundation provides scholarships to the children of injured workers, regardless of insurance carrier, so they can pursue their dreams of higher education. Since the foundation's launch in 2000, we've awarded $4.5 million in scholarships to 497 students across Colorado. Scholarship applications are being accepted until February 15 for the 2018–2019 school year. Learn more.

2017 Employee Giving Campaign Breaks Records
Pinnacol is leading a revolution in caring for our communities by giving back through the Employee Giving Campaign (EGC), which we’ve held annually for more than 20 years. This year’s campaign was record-breaking, with more than 80 percent employee participation. By giving together, nearly $230,000 has been pledged to support charities important to Pinnacol employees.

Board Approves Rate Decrease
The Pinnacol Assurance board of directors made two big decisions that will shrink policyholder costs:

  1. Approved a rate decrease of 7.4 percent effective January 1, 2018.

    Our third consecutive rate decrease is a result of steady improvement in our combined ratio, continued decrease in lost time claims frequency, improved claims severity, and a strong Colorado economy.
  2. Announced the intent to issue a general dividend in 2018.

    The general dividend is a portion of Pinnacol’s surplus returned to our policyholders. Our ability to issue a dividend was made possible by our strong operating results. Barring a significant and unexpected financial loss in Q4, the dividend is expected to be approximately $50 million, matching the amount issued in 2017.



Idaho Industrial Commission and Idaho Office of Drug Policy Host Opioid Panel
In December, the Idaho Industrial Commission and the Idaho Office of Drug Policy hosted a panel on industrial injuries and opioids, bringing together experts from the Idaho State Insurance Fund (SIF), the Idaho State Pharmacy Association, the Drug Enforcement Administration, business leaders, and medical professionals.

Key speaker Teresa Raymond, an SIF claims supervisor with more than 28 years of experience in the workers’ compensation industry, provided insight from the insurers’ perspective. When workers are injured on the job, more than 50% of claimants are prescribed some sort of opioid to help manage their pain, according to a report by the NCCI on opioid use in Idaho.

In 2015, 223 Idahoans died from opioid overdoses, a significant increase from prior years. While that number may seem small, the reach of opioid abuse affects thousands more across the state, and the costs are staggering.



Employees Demonstrate Caring and Commitment With Angel Tree Program
Numerous LWCC employees demonstrated caring and commitment by contributing gifts to the annual Angel Tree program. The tree is sponsored by the claims department to help bring holiday joy to the children and spouses of injured workers who have been killed on the job while working for LWCC policyholders. Gifts are also collected for catastrophically injured workers and their immediate family members.

This year, LWCC provided gifts to 11 families, including 11 wives/widows, six injured workers and 17 children. Gifts collected for these individuals were delivered by several LWCC employees the week before Christmas.

LWCC AVP of claims Jill Leonard said, “There were a lot of individuals to coordinate gifts for this year. Hearing all the stories from deliveries and watching our employees reach out to families during a difficult year is so humbling. I would like to give a special thanks to those who acted as ambassadors for each of the families and the employees who helped coordinate gifts. Employees in claims and other departments helped this project run smoothly, and, as a result, wonderful stories were told. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Angel Tree program this year.”

LWCC SVP and chief claims officer Paul Buffone added, “I am proud of our company for continuing this holiday tradition of helping families and children in need. I am especially proud of our employees whose generosity makes our Angel Tree program possible.”

LWCC’s Policyholder Uses Dividend to Purchase Two New Buses
Regina Coeli Child Development Center (RCCDC) has been an LWCC policyholder since June 1993. RCCDC is a nonprofit organization that is funded through grants from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services. Its goal is to provide developmental learning experiences to prepare children for school.

In addition, RCCDC provides Head Start and Early Head Start services. These programs work with families in support of the child to help achieve their goals by assisting with housing, employment, transportation, financial security, and school readiness.

To help with transportation, RCCDC used its 2016 dividend funds to purchase new buses for the Bogalusa Head Start and St. Helena Head Start programs.

Purchasing new buses was essential for RCCDC. LWCC safety services consultant Casey Blades said, “Several of their buses were beyond repair and needed to be replaced. Without the dividend, buses would have been needed to be donated or purchased with a large monetary donation. It is difficult to budget an 80K bus when every penny is accounted for.”

Safety Services Consultants Demonstrate Tire Safety at Farm Bureau Kids’ Day
On Thursday, November 16, LWCC safety services consultant Jay McGovern and lead safety services consultant Damian Simoneaux traveled to Elton, Louisiana, to demonstrate tire safety to nearly 200 high school students who are active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization.

FFA is committed to providing students a path for achievement and career success through agricultural education. The program welcomes students who aspire to be teachers, doctors, scientists, engineers, and more.

During the presentation, Jay and Damian reviewed statistical data from LWCC policyholders, and they shared how to find and interpret tire manufacturer data and tire inspection procedures. They also, demonstrated using a tire gauge extension hose and showed the students a video of an exploding tire, to reinforce the dangers of using improper safety measures.

LWCC aspires to reach the younger audience, and specifically students, with important safety messages.

LWCC Kids’ Chance Invitational Golf Tournament Raises Over $35,000
The 14th annual LWCC Kids' Chance invitational golf tournament raised over $35,000 for the Louisiana Bar Foundation (LBF) Kids' Chance Scholarship Program.

The Kids' Chance Scholarship Program provides scholarships to dependent children of Louisiana workers killed or permanently and totally disabled in workplace accidents.

At the tournament, held at the Country Club of Louisiana in Baton Rouge on September 25, LWCC president and CEO Kristin Wall presented a check for $30,000 to Kids' Chance committee co-chair Michelle Sorrells and LBF president Valerie Briggs Bargas, who accepted on behalf of the Kids' Chance Scholarship Program. A final accounting of the tournament and a few unexpected donations brought the total amount raised up to $35,600.

In 2003, LWCC's board of directors founded this tournament to raise money for the Kids' Chance Louisiana chapter. Since its inception, the LWCC golf tournament has raised over $445,000, which has contributed to 275 scholarships totaling $604,600 awarded to LBF Kids' Chance Scholarship recipients.

"This financial assistance goes a long way in helping to support educational goals. But more than that, it lets recipients know that people care and remember what they are going through," stated Wall. "We are proud to be a part of something that truly impacts the lives of Louisiana children affected by workplace injury."

The Kids' Chance Scholarship Program is administered by the Louisiana Bar Foundation and governed by a committee representing a cross-section of legal and workers' compensation communities, including LWCC. The first program, Kids' Chance, Inc., was established in 1988 by the Workers' Compensation Section of the Georgia State Bar. Today, there is a collection of independent programs in 36 states. These programs were celebrated during National Kids' Chance Awareness Week, November 13–17, 2017.

"Kids' Chance believes that we can make a significant difference in the lives of all children affected by a workplace injury by helping them pursue and achieve their educational goals," stated Sorrells. "National Kids' Chance Awareness Week is designed to highlight Kids' Chance initiatives, programs, and state organizations and raise awareness about Kids' Chance and our mission."



MEMIC Celebrates 25-Year Anniversary
MEMIC first opened its doors in January 1993 and plans to celebrate a variety of milestones throughout 2018, a quarter century after the near-collapse of Maine’s workers’ compensation market in the early 1990s. An editorial by president and CEO Michael Bourque gave an overview of the company’s history in the Portland Press Herald. Bourque was also interviewed in October about the state of the workers’ comp market by Independent Agent Magazine.

MEMIC Employees Choose Charitable Donations
At its year-end holiday celebration, The MEMIC Group announced that all of its employees could each direct $100 to a 501c3 charity “that captures their hearts” as part of the kickoff to the company’s 25th anniversary. MEMIC Promotes Vinas and Hires Bialek
The MEMIC Group has announced the promotion of Adelin Vinas to the position of claims director of the Atlantic Region, which includes MEMIC’s Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey offices. To support continued growth within the New York market, The MEMIC Group hired Tammy Bialek to the position of senior production underwriter.



Chesapeake Employers Insurance Expands Health Service Department
Chesapeake Employers’ Insurance Company welcomes Danielle Quinn, PharmD, to the organization’s expanding Health Services department. As the pharmacist case manager, Ms. Quinn is responsible for managing the Pharmacy Utilization Program, which includes providing oversight of prescription drug use and reviewing prescription medications.

Ms. Quinn works with providers on prescription medicines and provides outreach for medical providers and pharmacists to offer educational materials and support for injured workers.

Chesapeake Employers has been steadily expanding its Health Services Department. It is staffed with 25 nurses, three physicians, a physical therapist, and now a pharmacist.

ERM Receives Recognition
Chesapeake Employers is proud to announce that its Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) plan, process, and maturity were recognized for excellence by the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS) at the RIMS ERM Conference held in Los Angeles in November 2017.

Chesapeake Employers Helps to Strengthen Prescription Drug Monitoring Efforts
Chesapeake Employers gave the Maryland Department of Health a gift of $250,000 on December 21, 2017, to help bolster the state's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and support the agency's efforts to combat opioid overdose and abuse in Maryland. The gift was the third and final installment totaling $750,000 over the span of three fiscal years.

“Because we understand the horrific impact that opioid abuse can have on the lives of injured workers, their families, and communities, the opioid addiction epidemic is a critical focus for Chesapeake Employers,” explained Tom Phelan, president and CEO of Chesapeake Employers. “I’m grateful that with the support of our board of directors, we were able to gift these funds to support the state’s initiatives to help curb this devastating epidemic in Maryland.”

High School Students Learn About STEM Careers in Insurance
A group of local high school students visited SFM’s office recently to learn about the many technology, math, and engineering-focused career options at SFM and throughout the insurance industry.

Students in Apple Valley High School’s E3 STEM program heard from actuaries, business intelligence analysts, software developers, operations managers, and others about their work, and even had a chance to try solving some real business problems.

“Students don’t always realize there are a variety of exciting career opportunities in the insurance industry for those interested in math, technology and related disciplines,” said SFM senior vice president and chief information officer Dave Kaiser. “We had fun giving students a taste of the projects we work on here, and learning more about their aspirations.”

SFM Offers New Assistance Program for Injured Workers
SFM is now offering an innovative service to help injured workers deal with struggles of everyday life they may be facing.

The Injured Worker and Family Assistance Program is available to injured employees (as well as their household members and dependents ) whose workers’ compensation claims are being handled by SFM. A group of SFM claims representatives recommended creating the program after seeing injured workers struggle with a variety of personal issues that workers’ compensation benefits can’t account for.

Through the program, injured workers and family members can receive services similar to those offered by traditional employee assistance programs, such as:

  • Counseling for a variety of issues such as mental health or strained relationships.
  • Help with weight loss or smoking cessation.
  • Assistance finding child care.
  • Help with housing needs.
  • Financial consultation.
  • Self-paced online programs to address depression, anxiety, and other issues.

These services are offered through Magellan Healthcare, a national provider of employee assistance programs. Any personal information employees share through the service is kept confidential, and SFM receives no identifiable information about who uses the service. The service is free to injured workers and their families.

The services provided through this program are not required by workers’ compensation law and do not constitute workers’ compensation benefits. Rather, this program is an innovative, value-added offering for SFM policyholders.



Growing a Safer Workforce
Ten Montana college students majoring in construction trades or industrial hygiene/occupational safety and health each received $1,500 academic scholarships through Montana State Fund’s (MSF’s) Growing a Safer Montana initiative. The new initiative, launched in 2017, reflects MSF’s commitment to change the safety culture for the next generation of Montana employees. The competitive scholarship is awarded to students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate a desire to champion safety as they move into their professional endeavors.

Another Growing a Safer Montana program is the high school safety equipment grant. High school educators teaching construction trade and industry courses have the opportunity to apply for grants up to $750 that help purchase needed safety materials, equipment, or protective gear for their students. Last fall, over 600 students from eight Montana high school classrooms received the equipment. In addition, MSF supplies safety materials and resources that the teachers can use to reinforce safety awareness in their classrooms.

MSF’s other young worker safety efforts include a young worker section on and a young worker safety-focused statewide media campaign.

New MSF Board Members Appointed
Governor Steve Bullock appointed two new members to the MSF board. Jim Molloy is a Helena attorney, and Cliff Larsen is a former Missoula legislator and vocational rehabilitation/healthcare professional.

These individuals join chair Lance Zanto and Lynda Moss, Matthew Mohr, Jack Owens, and Jan VanRiper. MSF’s board of directors consists of seven individuals. Their specific responsibilities as provided in law include:

  • Ratemaking
  • Declaring dividends
  • Approving an annual strategic business plan
  • Establishing the annual operating budget
  • Determining the appropriate surplus levels
  • Submitting an annual financial report

Also, the board retains major independent accounting and actuarial firms to validate MSF’s financial position and reserves. The board also has the responsibility of hiring MSF’s CEO.



New eApp Expedites Application
NYSIF launched a streamlined electronic application and eQuote that significantly reduces the time it takes to apply for NYSIF workers’ compensation insurance and receive a quote.

NYSIF designed the new application to accommodate all types of employers. Potential policyholders now answer only 10 questions, with simplified required responses, based on the applicant’s business size and type. Processing time is also reduced, thanks to electronic submission of the application, which eliminates mail delays.

“We shortened the application from 26 questions to 10,” NYSIF coordinator of user operations James Kennedy said. “Now the customer answers fewer questions to receive a quote and obtain coverage faster.”

“This speeds the customer experience. By eliminating almost two-thirds of the questions that were previously required, the new process dramatically reduces the time to complete the application.”

Most applicants will receive faster quotes, and new businesses with no payroll history or accident experience who use the streamlined application can receive a quote in one day. The new eApplication is more convenient for registered brokers as well as safety group managers, whose information will pre-fill the application when they log in to apply for insurance for their clients. The application also includes on-screen “help text” that will more easily guide individuals through the process.

Expanded Online Services
In our continuing efforts to make doing business with NYSIF easier, workers’ compensation policyholders can now take full advantage of three new features that allow them to do the following with their online accounts:

  • Access a vastly enhanced and expanded Claims Search system
  • Grant your broker permission to view online claims information
  • Add other authorized users to your account

Our new Claims Search offers expanded information about claims. A new, easy-to-navigate portal makes reviewing claims much easier for policyholders, who can search by policy or claim number and access information about benefit payments, decisions, awards, authorized treatments, and more.

Policyholders can add authorized brokers and other users, such as administrative or human resources staff, to their accounts. These users have the same access as the policyholder for both workers’ compensation and disability benefits policies.

Fraud Awareness Campaign
NYSIF’s new fraud awareness campaign urges concerned citizens not to look the other way when it comes to fighting workers’ compensation fraud.



Protecting Ohio Firefighters
Research shows that residue collected on firefighters’ gear during a blaze can cause respiratory disease, cancer, and other ailments unless the gear is sufficiently protective or can be cleaned properly.

That’s why the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) created the new Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements Grant Program, which provides $2 million a year to help departments purchase safety gear and equipment designed to protect firefighters from carcinogens and other harmful elements encountered during a fire fight.

“The dangers of fighting a fire do not stop when the flames are extinguished,” said BWC administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison. “The men and women who risk their lives to save ours deserve access to the best equipment and tools that can minimize long-term threats to their health and wellbeing.”

The program provides a 5-to-1 match up to $15,000 for public and private employers with annual payroll of at least $500,000. No match is required for employers with less than $500,000 in payroll. Learn more about the program at

Ohio’s Injury Rates, Claims Continue to Fall
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in Ohio took a 9 percent tumble last year and fell well below the national average for the fourth consecutive year. Ohio experienced 2.7 injuries per 100 full-time employees in 2016, better than the national average of 3.2. Specifically, the study showed an injury rate among Ohio private employers at 2.7 per 100 workers, below the national average of 2.9.  Rates for public employers were 3.1 injuries per 100 workers, compared to a national average of 4.7.  

The results coincide with an overall drop in workplace injury claims in the BWC system. There were 87,883 allowed claims for Ohio employers insured by BWC in 2016, a 16.8 percent drop from 2010. This is the lowest number of claims dating back to at least 1997, when there were more than 277,000 claims.

We attribute the declines to many factors, including more employers putting safety education and resources to work. From 2010 through 2015, we saw a 71 percent increase in the number of employers using BWC’s safety programs and services.

In December, SAIF mailed its 2018 calendar to more than 50,000 policyholders, agents, and other stakeholders. This year’s theme is “building a better—and safer—Oregon,” to celebrate the rebounding construction industry. Each month, a different policyholder representing the theme is featured.

Local Police Practice Total Worker Health
This quarter we looked at how one policyholder—the Bend Police Department—is using yoga and mindfulness to be safer and healthier on the job.

“To survive a 25- to 30-year career in this chaotic profession, you need to start with the basic building block of taking care of yourself,” said Captain Cory Darling. “You don't think you need help when you have a badge."

360-degree videos highlight holiday hazards
Testing out new technology while educating Oregonians, we released two 360-degree videos this holiday to highlight holidays hazards at home and holiday hazards at work. The videos remind people to keep an eye out for unsafe behavior during the holiday season.

"Most people know not to step on the top part of a ladder, or to remove tripping hazards," said Leigh Manning, senior safety consultant at SAIF. "But when you're on deadline for holiday parties and workplace projects, it's easy to take the risk." 

Relaxation Videos Combat Stressful Season
SAIF didn’t just limit videos to 360-degree content this quarter; we also offered a series of stress-reducing short videos for Oregonians in need of a relaxation break. One video highlights tips on slow breathing, while others transport you to relaxing Oregon locations. SAIF will continue to add to the video library over the year. More information can be found at



WCF Insurance Appoints New COO
In September, the WCF Insurance board of directors appointed Matthew Lyon as chief operating officer.

Lyon has most recently worked as head of commercial insurance product management at Farmers Insurance Group of Companies in Los Angeles. He was responsible for the development and execution of commercial insurance strategies and initiatives to achieve profit and growth objectives for Farmer’s $2 billion multi-peril commercial auto and workers’ compensation lines of business.

Overall, Lyon has broad experience in the insurance industry, successfully serving in product management, operations, and strategy roles the past 15 years at, among others, Nationwide Insurance and Hartford Insurance Group.

“I’m joining WCF Insurance because I want to be a part of a company that has a strong foundation and limitless opportunities to grow,” said Lyon. “WCF Insurance is in a unique and promising position. It is deeply humbling and thrilling to have the opportunity to help lead the next chapter of this great 100-year-old company.”

As COO, Lyon will oversee marketing and sales, underwriting, safety and health, IT, human resources, and corporate strategy.
