ERM--What Is It, and What to Expect From the New ERM Committee

By Rick Spaulding and Meagan Shields

As a new AASCIF committee, we are excited to provide ERM resources and education to our fellow AASCIF members. This article will provide a high-level description of ERM and outline our committee’s goals for 2018.

What is ERM?

So what is ERM, also known as Enterprise Risk Management? Simply put, ERM is a holistic approach to identifying, assessing, and managing risks and their impact across the entire organization. In the practice of ERM, organizations identify existing and emerging risks and manage those risks within a defined risk appetite to ensure the sustainability of the organization and achievement of objectives. As business complexity increases and new risks emerge, a well-implemented ERM program enhances enterprise resiliency by enabling an organization to better anticipate and prioritize risks and effectively respond to minimize disruption and maximize opportunity.

What to expect from the new ERM Committee

Education

Education is the ERM Committee’s primary focus. For the annual conference, we are planning an “ERM 101” educational session targeting AASCIF members who are not closely involved with their organization’s ERM program but would like to learn about the basic concepts of ERM.

Our committee will also provide in-depth ERM sessions at the annual conference for AASCIF members who are significantly involved in their organization’s program and interested in learning more about specific ERM topics (to be determined) for the benefit of their organization.

Finally, we will host a roundtable discussion between ERM program leaders from AASCIF firms and will allow attendees to ask questions and hear feedback on ERM-related topics.

AASCIF member ERM survey

The ERM Committee will conduct a survey to take the “pulse” of ERM programs across AASCIF. The data gathered will help our committee to determine the resources and information needed to support ERM program enhancement across the organization. The survey will establish a baseline to monitor ERM program progress going forward. The findings and results of this survey will be shared in the Q3 AASCIF newsletter.

ERM resource library

Our goal is to create an ERM resource library available to all AASCIF members. We expect the library to include items such as links to informative ERM articles, educational webinars, information on various ERM software implementation tools, and contact information for ERM leaders at AASCIF firms. We envision a platform that will connect ideas and resources with people to promote idea generation with enhanced networking capabilities, leading to a significant increase in the value of an AASCIF membership.

We look forward to becoming a valuable ERM resource for all AASCIF members and welcome any feedback and contributions you may have in support of our 2018 initiatives. Please feel free to contact members of the ERM Committee with any ERM-related questions. We are here to help!
