A New
Year is always a good time to resolve to make a few changes. And the
AASCIF website, www.aascif.org,
is no different. The current site has not been updated in years and
it is outdated in terms of its’ capabilities and ease of use.
At the AASCIF All-Committee meeting last January in Las Vega, the
AASCIF Communications Committee discussed ways to redesign the site
and secure the funds to do it.
By
updating the technology used to support the website and redesigning
the layout, the Committee’s goal was to make the site more
user-friendly, both for members using the site and for those who are
responsible for updating content.
In
order to get input, members of all of the AASCIF Committees were
asked for suggestions on how to improve the site.
Most Committees expressed enthusiastic support for improving
the site and its usability – particularly those with experience
managing the website. The
Committees offered the following suggestions:
-
Procure a better content
management system to allow easier updating.
-
Review and restructure the
site to allow easier navigation.
-
Consider adding capability
for RSS Feeds/Blogs.
-
Update information on the
site.
-
Provide ability to play
audio and visual files.
-
Establish secure areas for
committees to store and share info.
-
Create an “Ask a
colleague” section.
-
Provide the ability to
maintain or automate group mailing lists.
-
Ensure two layer drill down
to eliminate hyperlinks and a less cluttered home page.
-
Give the Stat Book
prominence. Create an advertisement or link to the article about
the Stat Book until it is ready.
At the Executive Committee meeting in November 2009,
the group discussed the issue of revamping the site. The Executives
decided that the website should be restructured and approved to fund
the project for $30,000. At this point, the Communications Committee
is in the process of procuring bids for the redesign with a final
selection in the coming months.
So keep an eye out for more details about the unveiling of the new
and improved AASCIF website in 2010. In
