From the AASCIF President
I enjoyed seeing so many of you last month at the Annual AASCIF Conference in Big Sky, Montana. In fact, it was one of the highest-attended conferences in AASCIF history. Thanks to Lanny Hubbard and his team for coordinating such a well-organized event in such a breathtaking setting. From complimentary airport transportation to daily gifts at our hotel room doors, it was the small touches that meant the most.
Big Sky Resort was a wonderful venue that offered activities for everyone. Attendees took bus trips to Yellowstone National Park, experienced whitewater rafting, and tried their hands at fly-fishing. We also had the chance to relax and enjoy the town of West Yellowstone and its Union Pacific Train Depot, where we enjoyed light jazz, dinner, and an outdoor presentation about the history of the area and the attractions of Yellowstone National Park.
The conference sessions covered broad perspectives this year, addressing topics such as employee motivation and company structure – presented by refreshing, dynamic speakers. In addition, the AASCIF Communications Awards were presented; you can review all the winners on the AASCIF Web site under News & Events .
Our annual AASCIF Membership meeting was held on Tuesday, August 7, during which we elected the 2008 AASCIF officers, who are members of the AASCIF Executive Committee. Four officers were re-elected, and Harry Gregory, Director/CEO of the South Carolina State Accident Fund, was elected to fill the vacant vice president position.
Thank you to all of the conference sponsors for making this event possible. Next year's conference will be held August 17-20 in Salt Lake City, Utah; I hope to see you there. I'm also pleased to announce that Maine agreed to host the 2009 conference – thanks to John Leonard and his staff for filling this role.
Don't forget that the AASCIF CEO Meeting is November 7-8 in Las Vegas. Close on its heels is the 2008 All-Committee Meeting, also in Las Vegas from January 16-17. Nominations for 2008 AASCIF committees are due October 12, which I communicated to CEOs earlier this month via e-mail.
In other news, now that Congress is back in session, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) will heat up dramatically. The extension recently passed in the House, and the attention is now focuses on what the Senate will do. As it unfolds this fall, we'll be keeping an eye on things along with other federal issues that may impact our industry.
Thanks for your continued support of AASCIF, and I hope to see you in Las Vegas at the AASCIF CEO Meeting and at the 2008 All-Committee Meeting.
