It was great to see so many of you at the Annual AASCIF Conference in Midway,
Utah. Thanks to Ray Pickup and his staff for all the work they did to ensure
a successful event. The Zermatt Resort & Spa is an amazing facility in
a beautiful setting, and attendees enjoyed all of the outdoor activities that
Utah has to offer.
I know you especially enjoyed my ski jumping at Utah Olympic Park (see the
series of photos below). Most of you bought into it, but, as members of the
insurance industry, you were surprised that I’d take such a risk—which
is why I didn’t. Gotcha!

The conference program offered a variety of sessions
with speakers who had many industry insights, covering both national and
local workers’ compensation
issues. One highlight was a CEO Roundtable discussion hosted by Bob Hartwig,
president of the Insurance Information Institute. The AASCIF Communications
Awards were also presented at the conference—to view the complete list
of winners, go to the News & Events section of the AASCIF Web site.
Our annual AASCIF CEO & Executive Committee meeting was held on Wednesday,
August 20, during which we elected the 2009 AASCIF officers, who are members
of the AASCIF Executive Committee. Dennis Smith, president and CEO of Missouri
Employers Mutual Insurance Co., was elected as the 2009-2010 AASCIF president.
Tom Phalen, president and CEO of Maryland’s Injured Workers’ Insurance
Fund, was elected as the newest vice president, joining the other 2009 vice
presidents: Lanny Hubbard, Montana State Fund; Nancy MacCready-Williams, Workers’ Compensation
Board of Nova Scotia; Don Smith, SCF Arizona; and Harry Gregory, South Carolina
State Accident Fund.
Thank you to all of the conference sponsors for making this event possible.
I hope to see you at next year’s conference, which will be held August
9-12 in Portland, Maine. I’m also pleased to announce that the dates
for the 2010 conference are July 25-28 in Lexington, Kentucky. Thanks, again,
to Roger Fries and his team for agreeing to take that on.
Don’t forget that the AASCIF CEO Meeting is November 5-6 in Las Vegas,
followed closely by the 2009 All-Committee Meeting, also in Las Vegas from
January 28-29. Nominations for 2009 AASCIF committees are due October 10, which
I communicated to all CEOs last month via e-mail.
Thanks for your continued support of AASCIF, and I hope to see you in Las
Vegas at the AASCIF CEO Meeting and at the 2009 All-Committee Meeting.
