From the AASCIF President

June 29, 2007

It’s hard to believe that 2007 is already half over, but here we are, at the end of June.

It was a busy spring – and a hot one in Colorado, with many parts of the state sweltering through multiple 90-degree days. I hope you’ve been able to stay cool in your part of the U.S. or Canada.

Many of the AASCIF standing committees have been hard at work, planning workshops for this summer and fall that will address issues in their areas of interest. These workshops offer a wealth of information, as well as networking opportunities with members of other state funds. I encourage you to attend if you can. Thanks to those of you who are volunteering your time to work on these committees, which are valuable resources to everyone in AASCIF. For a complete list of workshops, go the AASCIF Web site’s “News & Events” page.

From August 5-8, be sure to “Reach for the Sky” with the folks at the Montana State Fund, who have put together an exhilarating program for the Annual AASCIF Conference in Big Sky. You’ll enjoy activities and presentations at the breathtaking Big Sky Resort, one of Montana’s leading vacation destinations. Here are a couple of highlights:

  • On Monday night, August 6, be sure to attend the reception and dinner at Union Pacific Dining Lodge in West Yellowstone.
  • Tuesday, August 7, is the Annual AASCIF Membership/Business Meeting, during which we’ll elect the 2008 AASCIF officers, who comprise the AASCIF Executive Committee. Five vice presidents are up for re-election.
  • You can still register (before July 5), so go to the conference Web site for more information.

Although it seems a ways off, don’t forget that t he 2007 CEO Conference has been scheduled for November 7-8 in Las Vegas. Mark your calendar and watch your e-mail for more information.

Thanks for your ongoing support of AASCIF and the many issues we’re currently facing. We’re continuing to actively monitor the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act (TRIA) debate in Washington, and we’re communicating with legislators about how important a permanent TRIA extension is for workers’ comp carriers. Although the legislative session will end soon, we remain optimistic that the House and Senate will revisit TRIA legislation this fall so that something is in place before TRIA expires at the end of this year. With regard to congressional discussions about federal oversight of the insurance industry, we’re keeping an eye on recent legislation that has been introduced in committee.

Finally, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the many new AASCIF fund CEOS who have joined us in recent months, who I look forward to meeting and working with at upcoming events.

Hopefully, I’ll see many of you at the annual conference in Big Sky. Stay cool this summer!
