From the AASCIF President
As summer gets into full swing, I hope that you are able to stay cool—especially
with the rising gas prices and other economic concerns that are heating things
up. For those of you in the midwestern part of the U.S., I wish you well and
hope you’re able to recover soon from the devastating floods of the past
several weeks.
From August 17-20, I expect to see many of you at “Where Ideas Take
Flight,” in
Midway, Utah, the site of our 2008 Annual Conference. The Utah Workers’ Compensation
Fund is hard at work putting together a great program for this year’s
conference. You’ll hear from experts in both the workers’ compensation
insurance industry and from corporate America. On Wednesday, August 20, a CEO
Roundtable discussion will be hosted by Bob Hartwig, president of the Insurance
Information Institute. To top things off, you can enjoy all the outdoor activities
that Utah has to offer, as well as the comfort and luxury of Zermatt Resort & Spa.
If you’d like to attend, you can still register on the conference
Web site.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the 2008 AASCIF CEO Meeting, which is at
the Wynn Las Vegas, November 5-6, 2008. Soon after that, the All-Committee
Meeting will take place at the Mirage in Las Vegas from January 28-29, 2009.
Watch your e-mail for more information on these events.
Thanks for your ongoing support of AASCIF and the issues we’re currently
facing. Right now, there is discussion in Congress about federal oversight
of the insurance industry. The National Insurance Act proposes creating a system
known as an Optional Federal Charter (OFC), which would let insurers choose
to be federally regulated in addition to their state regulations. This legislation
could impact several AASCIF fund, so we’re observing the developments
closely.
Finally, I’d like to extend my congratulations to the four new AASCIF
fund CEOs who’ve joined us in recent months: Bruce Furness in North Dakota
(the interim CEO), Norman Becker in New Mexico, Ray Pickup in Utah, and Steve
Czoschke in Wyoming. I look forward to working with you.
I’ll see you in Midway, Utah, next month.
Ken Ross
