Pat Johnson - AASCIF PresidentAre you making plans to attend the joint AWCBC-AASCIF conference in Vancouver? I hope so! It’s going to be a great program in a great place with great people. Just take a look at what’s in store on the facing page.

Ours is an increasingly virtual world. There’s no shortage of information—some misinformation—pushed our direction. For all the imperfections of today’s electronic newsletters, messaging, and truly worldwide web of readily available information, I wouldn’t want to go backward in time. This evolution is a good thing.

But the difference between information and knowledge is perhaps more noteworthy now than ever. For many of us, knowledge and perspective for key decisions come after reflection and discussion of all that information with real people face-to-face. In a world where a half-truth or misinformation can travel as easily as good information, where a key point can be buried in a sea of stuff, coming together to just talk is as important as it ever was. It’s one of those things that shouldn’t “evolve out” because its purpose remains vital.

Our British Columbia hosts have an excellent program planned for us. It will be a great opportunity to listen, to learn, to just talk, and to make the connections we’ll need to help our organizations successfully evolve in the coming year and beyond.

There’s a power of place that is a subtler but a no less compelling force in our evolution. Our annual conferences provide a rich opportunity to experience different places, to meet old friends and make new ones, in new places and old. Being there just helps.

Some places have a special power. Beautiful Vancouver is one of those places for me. Twenty-eight years ago my husband and I honeymooned there. Being in Vancouver reminds us of how we’ve changed and how we haven’t. So we look forward to each return trip—and to our next twenty-eight years of evolution together.

We’ll look forward to seeing you there.
